To celebrate its bicentennial in 1961, Manchester appropriated funds for a written history of Manchester and appointed a committee to oversee the celebration planning. In September 1961 Manchester, Vermont: A Pleasant Land Among the Mountains, written by Edwin L. Bigelow and Nancy Otis, became the first comprehensive history of Manchester. In 2008 the Northshire Bookstore, a family-owned, award-winning independent bookstore in Manchester Center, reprinted Manchester, Vermont: A Pleasant Land Among the Mountains, 1761-1961 by Edwin S. Bigelow and Nancy H. Otis using the Espresso Book Machine. This comprehensive history is now out of print but we are planning to make it available again in 2023.
